Chicago’s Gangsters and Prohibition

When the Constitution banned the production and sale of alcohol in the U.S., Chicago’s gangsters saw it as a perfect business opportunity! Using home stills like this one they were able to produce and sell illicit alcohol. Soon they became the major suppliers of alcohol during prohibition, and ushered in an era of organized crime, during which famous gangsters like Al Capone controlled the very profitable sale and distribution of alcohol to speakeasies and secret bars.
